WHY IT WORKS:

● Your Actual Spelling Words

You add the word lists that spellers are studying at school or home. Record each word or use a sentence to make the word meaning clear. Words are presented in a random order so spellers are ready to spell them in any order on a test or in a spelling bee. Some users have shared that having their children add and record their word lists has been another good way to practice each week. Practice anytime, anywhere!

● Mastery Practice

Spellers practice their words until they are mastered. Spellers earn a star each time they correctly spell a word without a hint. Three stars equal a mastered word. When a speller has mastered a word, Spelling Star will remove that word from the practice cycle. This allows spellers to focus on words that need extra practice. Individual words or full lists can easily be reset if additional practice is desired.

● Immediate Formative Feedback

Spelling Star immediately lets a speller know how they did on each word. It also provides them the option to redo the word right away if an error is made. Spellers can move on if desired, but the ability to fix an error on the spot reinforces the correct spelling. No more waiting until the end of the whole list to find out how they are doing on each word.

● Summative Feedback

At the end of each practice cycle, Spelling Star provides feedback for the entire list and provides the option to immediately practice it again. Spelling Star also provides a quick view of progress towards list mastery within the list selection screen. Spelling Star makes it easy to see how close spellers are to mastery.

● Audio and Hints

Spelling Star replays the recorded audio as many times as desired with no penalty towards mastery. If a speller is stuck, they simply tap the hint button to get a quick look at the word so they can finish it. While a hint won’t count towards mastery, it gets the speller un-stuck and prevents frustration. Spellers can then practice the word again or move on.

Pros and cons of Spelling Star app for iPhone and iPad

Spelling Star app good for

Ive said this many times, this is the best spelling app. I love how we can record a sentence for each word you put in. You can share the list with a class, which makes it great for teachers. It makes a positive sound when youve spelled the word correctly which is positive reenforcement. You can reset the list after the child has spelled each word correctly after 3 times. Its great to take on the go, my son does his spelling words in the car or at my other sons soccer practice. Its a great way to get your kid excited about spelling. We use it weekly and my son does get 100% on his spelling about 98% of the time. We love it!!
This app continues to be easy to use and has helped my children practice for their weekly spelling tests. Love the ability to share lists between devices.
Fantastic app for learning spelling words in any language. Engages the speller by allowing them to upload their list in their own voice. Spelling lists could not be easier for any style of learner!

Some bad moments

I love that my son can hear my voice giving him his spelling words. And hes at the age where using the iPad is so cool! Great app!
Works perfectly and the kids love it. I have a 3rd grader and Kindergartener. Both can use it at their own levels. Best app Ive found.
This allows me to input different list for each of my children, which is so helpful. Then, the app allows you to record the word. There is enough time allowed for the recording to also add a full sentence or the definition. In the "game," the children hear what you have recorded and then have to spell the word. My older daughter must use the word in a sentence on her spelling test, so this allows us to work on the word and help her to use it in a sentence--Thank You!
Spelling Star is a great way for kids to practice their spelling words. Entering the words is quick and easy for parents and practicing is fun for kids. Best spelling app Ive found!
Our kids (2nd grade & kindergarten) love helping to record their spelling words, and the immediate feedback helps them quickly master their words. Its easy for me because the kids can sit at the counter and practice while I make dinner. Great app!
I downloaded this for my first grader that is just starting to bring home spelling lists and was very happy to have found this app. I like that, while it does congratulate you for getting words right, it is not a spelling game. The experience of hearing a word pronounced, then simply having to spell it provides an model that simulates what the child will experience when they take the test at school. I didnt realize when I first downloaded and launched the application that I would need to record myself saying each word, but that was actually a fun part for me and in the end is much preferred to having some text-to-speech voice reading the words. Just know that when you get your childs spelling list, you may need to take it and the iPad to a quiet place for a few minutes to enter and record the words. Im already looking forward to doing this again next week when the next list comes home!
